Dear Jack

Everyone's Busy

The world's a big place. But where is everybody?

Ask someone to come over for a visit, to head to a local pub for a pint, to play a little tennis or watch a movie. It seems like, in my corner of the world, everyone's busy.

When did it get like this? We're more connected than ever, so they say. And sure, the same people who don't have time for a coffee seem to have plenty of time to view an Instagram Story or watch 12 episodes of Love Island in a few days. But where's the fun in that?

I don't know that the promise of social media as the great connector has really lived up to the year in review videos that Facebook puts out every year. In fact, I know it hasn't.

I long for a return to a time when we saved our comments for a late night get together, instead of on a TikTok video. I'm committed to getting back to that. I'm not going to sit and whine, I'm going to try to be the change I want to see in the world. Starting with my small community.

So no retreating. No ghosting someone because they ghosted me. You're too busy? No hard feelings. I'll keep trying you until you finish the finale or make it to the end of your feed.

We're all busy. But maybe a different kind of busy would make us all a little bit happier.
